Your plastic retainer is very helpful in maintaining the straight teeth you have worked so hard for. However, it isn’t very effective if you don’t take good care of it. So, to help you keep your plastic retainer in tip-top shape, our orthodontist, Drs. Shabbir Adenwalla and Inayat Ashai, has some special instructions for you.
-Rinse your retainer throughout the day with warm water each time you take it out of your mouth. This is important because bacteria and plaque can quickly form on the appliance.
-Clean your retainer daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive or microbial toothpaste. Just scrub the appliance after you brush your teeth and then rinse the retainer when you’re done with cool water.
-Keep the appliance safe when you take it out of the mouth. You can do so by keeping it in its case and putting it in your pocket, purse, drawer, or backpack so it doesn’t get lost or damaged.
