If you are getting your braces off soon, or are considering getting braces, at some point in time, we’ll talk about fitting you for a retainer.
A retainer is used to help keep your teeth in place after your braces have been removed. Like braces, a retainer is custom-made for you. Unlike braces, a retainer is removable. In the case of minor orthodontic issues, we might fit you with a retainer instead of braces.
Retainers are made from rubber or clear plastic, with a wire that covers the outside surface of your teeth. Retainers usually need to be worn constantly during the first six months after your braces have come off. After that, you will most likely need to wear your retainer while you sleep. The amount of time will vary between patients, but six months is generally the average amount of time. You will need to wear your retainer after your braces have been removed, since your teeth have not completely settled into their new positions, and a retainer will help keep them where they need to be.
In some cases, Dr. Shabbir Adenwalla or Dr. Inayat Ashai may place a fixed retainer on your teeth. A fixed retainer cannot be removed except by the doctor because it has been cemented into place. Fixed retainers have the advantage of keeping your teeth in place 24 hours a day.
Retainers are just one step in the process of helping you get the best smile you can.
